First date safety: meeting someone from a dating app in Thailand
Published
Most first dates are simply fun, a little nervous, and over too quickly. A few simple habits make sure yours stay that way. Here is how to meet someone from a dating app safely in Thailand.
Before you meet
Look for the verified badge. On ThaiLovely, every member who sends messages has passed an age and identity check with an ID document and a live selfie. The badge means that check was passed. It doesn’t tell you what someone intends, so keep using your judgement.
Keep chatting in the app. Stay on ThaiLovely until you’ve met and feel comfortable. If something goes wrong, you can report and block the person, and our moderators can review the messages you report. Be wary of anyone who pushes you to move to another app straight away.
Have a video call. A short video call confirms the person matches their photos and helps you both relax before meeting.
Don’t share too much too soon. Your home address, workplace, and financial details can wait. You don’t need to share your surname or LINE ID before the first date.
Plan the date
- Meet somewhere public and busy, such as a café, a mall, a park in the daytime or a night market. Our Bangkok date ideas and Chiang Mai date spots are full of good options.
- Get there and home on your own. Take the BTS or MRT, or book your own Grab or Bolt. Don’t accept a lift from your date the first time you meet.
- Tell a friend. Share who you’re meeting, where and when. LINE and Google Maps both let you share your live location with someone you trust.
- Charge your phone and carry a little cash for a taxi home.
During the date
- Watch your drink. Order it yourself, keep it with you, and don’t drink anything that tastes strange or that you left unattended.
- Go easy on alcohol. Stay clear-headed enough to make good decisions and get home.
- Stay in public. Going back to someone’s home or hotel room on a first date puts you somewhere you can’t easily leave.
- Trust your instincts. You don’t owe anyone your time. If you feel uncomfortable, it’s fine to end the date politely and leave. You can say you have an early start.
After the date
If someone made you uncomfortable, pressured you, or behaved badly, please tell us. Use Report on their profile or in your chat, and Block them so you can no longer find or message each other. Reports are confidential, and our moderators aim to act on them within 24 hours.
