Chiang Mai date spots: 12 romantic ideas in the north
Published
Chiang Mai moves at a slower pace than Bangkok, which makes it a lovely place to get to know someone. Mornings are cool in the hills, afternoons are for cafés, and evenings are for markets and temples lit up after dark. Here are twelve date ideas for the city and its surroundings.
1. Café hopping in Nimman
Nimmanhaemin Road and its side streets (sois) are full of cafés, dessert shops and small boutiques. Start with coffee, then walk to One Nimman for dinner or a drink. It’s busy, central and easy to reach, so it’s ideal for a first meeting.
2. The Old City temples at dusk
Inside the old city moat, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh are beautiful in the late afternoon light. Walk between them through quiet lanes and stop for a juice on the way. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes before entering temple halls.
3. Sunday Walking Street
Every Sunday evening, Ratchadamnoen Road from Tha Phae Gate turns into a long market of crafts, snacks and live music. On Saturdays the Wua Lai Road walking street does the same south of the old city. Go early in the evening before the crowds peak, and stay for street food.
4. Sunset from Doi Suthep
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits on the mountain above the city. Climb the long staircase guarded by naga serpents, walk the golden chedi and look out over Chiang Mai. Late afternoon gives you the best light, and the drive up is part of the experience.
5. Bamboo huts at Huay Tung Tao lake
About half an hour north-west of the city, Huay Tung Tao is a reservoir lined with bamboo huts on stilts where you can order food and sit by the water for hours. It’s relaxed, cheap, and great for a long conversation. Weekdays are quieter.
6. A morning at Jing Jai Market
Jing Jai Market (often called JJ Market) holds a weekend morning market with local farmers, crafts, coffee and breakfast stalls. It’s a bright, friendly setting for a daytime date if you’re both early risers.
7. Baan Kang Wat artists’ village
This small community of artists’ studios, cafés and workshops near Wat Umong feels like a village in the woods. Browse handmade ceramics and prints, then join a short workshop together if one is running.
8. The tunnels of Wat Umong
Wat Umong is a forest temple with centuries-old tunnels, a quiet lake and trees hung with proverbs. It’s peaceful and rarely crowded, a nice contrast to a busy market.
9. Khao soi for lunch
No Chiang Mai date is complete without khao soi, the curry noodle soup of the north. Find a well-loved local shop, share a few northern dishes such as sai ua sausage, and compare spice levels.
10. A day trip to Mon Cham
Mon Cham, about an hour’s drive into the mountains of Mae Rim, has terraced flower fields, bamboo shelters and views over the valleys. It’s best as a second or third date, when you’re happy to spend half a day together.
11. A khantoke dinner
A khantoke dinner serves northern Lanna dishes on low round tables, often with traditional music and dance. It’s a fun introduction to local culture if one of you is new to the north.
12. Yi Peng and Loy Krathong in November
During the November full moon, Chiang Mai celebrates Yi Peng and Loy Krathong with lanterns along the Ping River and around the old city. It’s the most romantic time of year to be here. Ticketed sky-lantern events sell out early, and releasing lanterns is restricted in some areas, so check the rules for that year.
When to plan a Chiang Mai date
- November to February is the cool season, with fresh mornings and clear skies. It’s the best time for outdoor dates.
- Roughly February to April can bring smoke from agricultural burning. Check the air quality and plan indoor dates on bad days.
- The rainy season, roughly May to October, turns the hills green. Keep an indoor option in mind.
Getting around
Grab and Bolt work well in Chiang Mai, and the red shared trucks called songthaew (rot daeng) are everywhere in the city. For first dates, make your own way there and back.
